Can a balcony have a garden?
Yes! The old days are gone wherein apartments had restrictions. Now, you can utilize your balcony for creating flower beds or you can also grow organic nutritious vegetables of your choice. But before starting your balcony garden you need to consider a few things.
- Always choose the saplings based on the climatic condition in your region as plants grow efficiently in their natural conditions. The amount of wind on the topmost floor will be different so choose a plant according to it.
- Confirm in advance the path for the water outlet that flows from the pots. It should be properly diverted to the sewage.
- You should have time to water your plants. If you are on a touring job, there should be someone to water the plants. Due to weather conditions, some plants may require water twice a day.
Here are few quick tips to utilize the space and grow a beautiful garden:
1. Know the direction of the sun
The most important factor to consider in the beginning is the direction of the sun. First, find the direction of your balcony whether it faces the shady north, the hot south, or the rising and setting sun of the east and west. All plants require a different amount of sunlight. It is proven that a balcony getting around 6 hours of sunlight allows various plantations. This helps the process of photosynthesis and enhances their growth.
North-facing balconies generally remain shady and it may not get any direct sunlight at all. But don’t worry, many plants prefer shade.
Zamioculcas, Snake plant, Peace Lily, Kentia palm, and Succulents are all grown in partial shade. South-facing balconies remain sunny throughout the day so The Arabian Jasmine, Peacock Flower, Nerium Oleander would be the best choice for your balcony. All the flowers and fruit plants will grow well in sunlight.
2. Choose the best soil
Soil is the bed for your plants. Therefore, you cannot use dirt or soil from the ground as it is not sterile and it can cause diseases to the plants. Potting soil needs to enable plant roots to breathe and let water drain. The soil or potting mix should provide nutrients to the plants. The best mix will include soil, organic matter, peat moss, and vermiculite.
3. Consider your planters and pots
There are plenty of planters available in the market but you have to choose the one which suits your requirement and balcony size. Large planters and pots made of terracotta and wood are very attractive and offer space for all types of plants to grow. Resin and plastic pots offer a lightweight alternative along with various sizes and shapes available. Make sure the containers you plan to use are compatible with the growth habits of your plants. A pot must have enough holes in the bottom to allow the excess water to drain away.

4. Use vertical space of the balcony
Vertical gardens are a space-saving concept for the home gardener as they employ the vertical walls of your balcony. Buy a potholder that will hold your pot vertically or you can get a custom wooden rack. Apart from this you can place it in a pot and let it grow on the wall. Growing more vines and climbers will cover the vertical space very well.
5. Hanging baskets
Hanging baskets don’t take much space and look beautiful on the balcony. You can use screws, zap straps, or brackets to fix and secure the basket/pot from being knocked off by the wind. Hanging baskets are suitable for small plants and climbers. You can use a plastic container to hand off the balcony railing or from the eaves.
