Why Slow Growth Feels Wrong With Money Plants
The Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum) grows genuinely fast under the right conditions — producing new leaves every 1–2 weeks during the active growing season and extending several centimetres of new vine growth per week in optimal setups. When this growth stalls — when the plant sits completely static for a month or more during what should be an active growing period — it signals that one or more environmental factors are holding it back.
Slow growth is not the same as sick growth. A Money Plant that looks healthy but is not growing is not in crisis — it is simply stagnant. The conditions are adequate for survival but not optimal for growth. The gap between surviving and thriving is precisely where most UAE Money Plants get stuck, and closing that gap requires identifying which specific factor is missing.
Here are the six most common causes of slow Money Plant growth in UAE homes — and exactly how to fix each one.
Cause 1 — Insufficient Light (Most Common in UAE)
Light is the single biggest factor in Money Plant growth speed — and insufficient light is the most common growth-limiting condition across Dubai and Abu Dhabi apartments. A Money Plant in low light does not actively suffer or decline — it simply reduces its metabolic rate to match the energy available, producing little to no new growth because it does not have enough photosynthetic energy to invest in expansion.
In UAE apartments — particularly those in densely built areas where neighbouring buildings shade windows, or those with north-facing orientations — the available light can be significantly less than the Money Plant needs for active growth, even if it appears adequately bright to the human eye.
A quick test: hold your hand above a white surface near where your Money Plant sits. A sharp, clear shadow means bright indirect light — adequate for good growth. A soft, blurry shadow means medium light — adequate for survival but not vigorous growth. No visible shadow means light is too low for healthy active growth.
The fix: Move your Money Plant progressively closer to a bright window — an east or west-facing window within 1–2 metres is ideal for UAE conditions. A south-facing window with sheer curtains provides excellent light while filtering the intense afternoon UAE sun that can scorch the leaves. If natural light is genuinely inadequate in your apartment, a full-spectrum LED grow light running 10–12 hours daily produces dramatic growth improvement — completely stalled plants often begin producing new leaves within 2–3 weeks of light improvement.
Cause 2 — Overwatering Causing Root Stress
This is the second most common growth stopper in UAE homes — and it is directly linked to the AC-cooled soil that dries far more slowly than outdoor heat suggests. A Money Plant with chronically waterlogged roots cannot actively grow because its damaged root system lacks the function needed to absorb water and nutrients efficiently. The plant uses all available energy managing root stress rather than investing in new leaf production.
Pothos don't truly go dormant indoors, so completely stalled growth usually means something is missing — and in UAE conditions, overwatered roots are frequently that something.
The Money Plant wants the top 2–3cm of soil to dry out completely before the next watering. In UAE AC apartments, this typically means watering every 7–14 days in summer and every 14–21 days in winter — far less frequently than the outdoor heat instinctively suggests.
The fix: Always check soil moisture at 3–4cm depth before watering using the finger test. If there is any moisture at all, wait. Reduce watering frequency and allow the soil to dry more completely between sessions. If root rot is already present — confirmed by a foul smell from the soil or soft, squishy stems — remove from the pot, inspect roots, trim damaged sections with sterilised scissors, and repot in fresh, well-draining potting mix.
Cause 3 — UAE Tap Water Mineral Buildup
UAE tap water's fluoride, chlorine, and dissolved mineral salts accumulate in the soil over repeated waterings, progressively raising salt concentration to levels that compromise root function. Roots operating in mineral-saturated soil cannot absorb water and nutrients efficiently — growth slows even though the plant looks outwardly healthy, because the limiting factor is below the soil surface where it is not visible.
The fix: Switch to distilled water, RO-filtered water, or collected AC condensate for all watering. Flush the existing soil generously with distilled water every 2–3 months — water heavily several times, allowing full drainage between each application, to wash accumulated mineral deposits out of the root zone. After switching to clean water and flushing the soil, most UAE Money Plants show visible growth improvement within 2–4 weeks.
Cause 4 — Root Bound Conditions
A Money Plant that has completely filled its pot with roots has nowhere new to grow — the compressed root mass cannot expand further, and the plant's above-ground growth stalls in parallel with the below-ground restriction. Signs of root binding include roots visibly emerging from drainage holes, soil drying out very rapidly after watering, and no new leaf production despite otherwise good conditions.
Slow growth is usually caused by a root-bound pot, among other factors. Move it to a brighter spot and repot once roots fill the container.
The fix: Repot in March or April — the beginning of the UAE growing season — into a container 2–3cm wider than the current pot using fresh, well-draining potting mix. The combination of fresh soil nutrients and expanded root space typically triggers new leaf production within 2–4 weeks of successful repotting.
Cause 5 — No Vertical Support — The Moss Pole Advantage
This is the most underutilised growth accelerator for Money Plants in UAE homes. Training the vine on a moss pole or trellis significantly increases growth rate — climbing pothos often grows larger leaves and faster than trailing ones because the plant senses room to grow upward.
In its natural habitat, the Money Plant is a climbing vine that grows upward along tree trunks toward brighter light. When trained vertically on a moss pole in a UAE apartment, it enters its most vigorous growth behaviour — producing larger, more lush leaves at a faster rate than the same plant trailing horizontally.
The fix: Install a moss pole in the pot and loosely tie the existing vines to it using soft plant ties. Mist the pole regularly to encourage aerial root attachment. Within 2–3 leaf cycles, most UAE Money Plants produce noticeably larger and more frequent new growth when climbing compared to trailing.
Cause 6 — Nutrient Depletion in Old Soil
A Money Plant in the same potting mix for more than 12–18 months has likely exhausted the available nutrients — particularly nitrogen, which drives green leafy growth. Slow growth is usually caused by lack of feeding, among other factors. Without adequate nitrogen, the plant simply does not have the building blocks needed for active leaf production.
The fix: Fertilise monthly during the UAE growing season (March to October) with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half the recommended strength. Apply only to moist soil — never dry — to prevent root burn. During UAE winter (November to February), stop fertilising entirely as the plant's growth naturally slows and it cannot efficiently process additional nutrients.

- Move to the brightest available indirect light position
