Washingtonia robusta, also known as the Mexican fan palm, is a large and striking palm species native to western Sonora and Baja California in Mexico. These trees are known for their impressive stature, towering height, and large, feather-like fronds that provide ample shade. Washingtonia robusta is a popular choice for landscaping in warm climates and is often used in urban areas, parks, and street medians.

Plant Care:

1. Light: Washingtonia robusta prefers full sun to light shade.
2. Water: Water regularly, but do not over-water. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
3. Soil: Washingtonia robusta is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, but prefers well-draining soils.
4. Hardiness: Washingtonia robusta is hardy in USDA zones 9-11 and can withstand temperatures as low as 20°F.
5. Fertilizer: Fertilize twice a year with a slow-release, balanced palm fertilizer.
6. Pruning: Prune dead or yellowing fronds as necessary. Do not remove the brown fibers (known as “skirt”) at the base of the fronds, as this protects the trunk from damage.
7. Pests and Diseases: Washingtonia robusta is generally pest- and disease-resistant, but may be susceptible to attacks from scale insects and fungal diseases. Regularly inspect the tree and treat promptly if necessary.

Note: Washingtonia robusta is a fast-growing species that can reach heights of up to 80 feet. When planting, allow plenty of space for the tree to grow and mature, and be mindful of its potential size when selecting a location.
