Description:
Tecomaria Capensis, also known as Cape Honeysuckle, is a fast-growing, evergreen shrub native to southern Africa. It is prized for its bright, orange-red, trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in profusion from summer to fall. This plant is commonly grown as a hedge, screen, or specimen plant, and is also used in wildlife gardens to attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
Plant Care:
- Light: Tecomaria Capensis prefers full sun to partial shade, and will grow best in a location with bright, direct light for at least 6 hours per day. Too little light can cause the plant to become leggy and to produce fewer flowers.
- Water: This plant is drought-tolerant and does not need frequent watering. It should be watered deeply when the soil is dry to a depth of 2-3 inches, and then allowed to dry out completely before watering again. Over-watering can cause root rot.
- Soil: Tecomaria Capensis prefers well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It can also tolerate slightly alkaline soil.
- Hardiness: This plant is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, where it can be grown outdoors in a sunny location. In cooler climates, it should be grown in a greenhouse or as a houseplant.
- Pruning: Pruning is not necessary, but the plant can be trimmed back after flowering to maintain its shape and to promote healthy growth.
- Precautions: Tecomaria Capensis is not toxic, but it has sharp thorns on its stems, so care should be taken when handling the plant. It is also a popular food source for some species of wildlife, so it may not be suitable for use in areas with heavy wildlife populations.
